Saab's upcoming Geneva Motor Show surprise has broken online this week, with images of the limited-edition Saab 9-3 Independence Edition surfacing on an enthusiast website.

According to website SaabsUnited, the Independence Edition marks the one-year anniversary of the purchase of Saab from its previous owner General Motors, by Dutch sports car company Spyker.

Among the limited edition 9-3 Convertible's special features are a new colour called Sunset Red, along with special 18-inch wheels and a redesigned front bumper.

Inside are new parchment leather seats with a single orange strip through the centre and a number of highlights from noted Saab tuning house, Hirsch.

The most appealing part of the package however is the 9-3 Independence Edition's powerplant: the new Saab 9-5's 165kW 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Details of the special model's distribution have yet to be revealed, but with only 366 examples reportedly planned it's unlikely we'll see this one in Australia.

As for its Australian operations, Saab has confirmed that its local operations are now in company hands, with existing and new dealerships to begin taking orders for the new 9-5 sedan this year.
