PORSCHE'S PANAMERA is increasingly looking like having a footprint across every premium sports niche, with the model range featuring the Panamera, the Panamera S, the all-wheel-drive Panamera 4S and the twin-turbo Panamera Turbo.

For now, the Panamera line-up can only be had with a 4.8 litre V8 engine, but in 2010 the range will grow yet again, with the German supercar manufacturer adding V6 and petrol-electric hybrid engines to the mix, and - according to Autocar - a diesel engine, to be joined later by a GTS range-topping flagship.

Autocar reports that, when asked, a senior executive at Porsche said: "There are V6 and V8 diesels within the Volkswagen Group that could be used as a basis [for a diesel Panamera]."

Being a Porsche, it's likely that any diesel engine transplanted into the Panamera from the Volkswagen parts bin would be tuned for performance - with fuel economy perhaps an important but secondary priority.

Porsche is also believed to be working on a range-topping GTS version of the Panamera, and like its larger Cayenne sibling, it would adopt performance-oriented steel springs, dropping the standard model's air suspension.
