Volkswagen have just reported that they have sold over 1 million DSG equipped vehicles, which gives you some idea just how popular this style of gearbox is becoming – and its just the beginning.

It’s not just about ease of use and driver enjoyment either, although this does play a large role in a new purchasers decision making process. Manufacturers are keen to adopt clutchless technology as there are efficiency gains to be had – DSG, DCT and CVT boxes tend to manage the task of gear-changing better than the average human can.

According to Automotive News, Renault are looking to develop DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) transmissions of their own, rather than be left out of the ‘clutchless revolution’. Renault already have access to clutchless technology through their ownership of Nissan but it is speculated that Renault are keen to develop their own versions.

One of the best DSG’s in the business is fitted to the new Nissan R35 GT-R but this is not a Nissan creation, it is in fact supplied by Borg-Warner.

It is further speculated that if Renault does proceed to develop their own DCT gearbox then it would utilize the lighter dry-clutch configuration rather than the wet-clutch set-up currently used by VW in their six-speed DSG.
