Renault has unveiled the Kangoo Be Bop, a van with a neat retractable roof that creates, oddly, a convertible van.

Based on the Kangoo Compact Concept that Renault unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, the Be Bop – very much a production model – will keep the two-door layout of the concept (tying it nicely to its trade/commercial origins).

If the crazy roof isn’t enough, the Be Bop also features two glass panels directly above the driver and passenger, and a fixed glass panel in the middle, forward of the rear panel which retracts to open the Be Bop up to the sun.

The Be Bop is a four-seater, and unlike most two-door cars with four seats, the rear passengers should be quite comfortable thanks to the square shape of the roof and the large rear windows.  Renault says the front occupants won’t even need to get out to let the rear passengers in, as they can comfortably get to the rear seats through the hatch at the back.

If it’s just you and your partner off for a drive down the coast, the rear seats can be removed to increase luggage space or to accommodate Le Dog.

The Be Bop is powered by three engine options; the 64kW 1.5-litre dCi, the 78kW 1.6-litre – both four-cylinder engines mated to a six-speed manual transmission – and lastly, a gas-powered version of the 1.6-litre.

While it’s not likely to make it to Aussie shores, the Be Bop will be available in Europe this year.
