NEWS THIS WEEK suggests that Renault and Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler are close to announcing a partnership, reportedly to be formalised through mutual equity stakes of less than 10 percent.

Discussions between the two carmakers have been ongoing since late last year, with both companies looking at ways to cut development and production costs.

The partnership would see the two companies share knowledge and technology. Renault-Nissan would benefit from Daimler's large car expertise, and Mercedes-Benz would gain a stronger foothold in the small car market through Renault-Nissan's experience in that segment.

According to Bloomberg, sources close to the talks say the agreement has stumbled on valuation issues, with Daimler valued at 37 billion euros and Renault at 9.7 billion.

Both companies have so far declined to comment on the status of discussions. However, speaking with Automotive News in January, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said that a decision is expected mid-year.
