Victorian motorists need to ensure they remain informed and vigilant if they want to get the best fuel prices day-to-day, according to RACV Manager for Vehicle Engineering, Michael Case.

Mr Case said that the long-standing tradition of Tuesday being the best day to fill up has been dead for "some months," with little chance of a return to the old ways.

Mr Case said the cold snap in Europe has caused an increase in the world crude oil price, which had led to a price hike at the bowser.

"We've got higher-than-usual petrol prices in Melbourne due to this increase and it has flowed on to a lesser extent to regional areas as well," said Mr Case.

"The price hike is higher than we've seen for some time and there is a risk that prices may increase further over the holiday season.”

Mr Case said RACV was inundated with calls from members and Victorian motorists, complaining about the increased price of fuel and the fluctuation in prices.

“These fluctuations make it difficult for motorists to know what the cheapest days to fill up are and it’s frustrating when these price fluctuations occur,” he said.

“The best strategy for motorists is to be informed and monitor sites such as the RACV website for information on current fuel pricing,” said Mr Case.
