FOLLOWING RECENT moves in Victoria and NSW to institute new anti-fraud drivers licence cards, the Queensland Government has today announced it will take similar steps.

According to Transport Minister Rachel Nolan, 2007 saw the identities of more than 87,000 Queenslanders stolen through licence fraud.

While Victorian's new licences feature a clear strip and the NSW learner and probationary cards show the birthdate repeated through the background, the new Queensland smartcard licences will go even more high-tech.

Starting later this year, new Queensland licences will feature a microchip embedded in the card - similar to those seen in bank cards - and a new computer-readable biometric photo will replace the existing photo system.

The new licences will rise in price from $73 for a five-year licence to $96, before rising to $152 in five years.
