News last month that former Audi product boss Matthias Mueller has been promoted to the driver's seat at Porsche fueled more speculation on a new sub-Boxster entry-level model.

The odds would now appear to be firming for the new car. According to recent reports out of Europe, Mueller's first challenge at Porsche is to get the new line of models off the ground.

Likely to be based on Volkswagen's on-again off-again mid-engined Bluesport concept revealed early last year, reports of a new more affordable entry-level Porsche have been circulating for some time. With Volkswagen's stated aim of becoming the world's number one carmaker by 2018, a volume-selling Porsche would go a long way to achieving that goal.

If it goes into production, the new model could help Porsche recover sales lost with the Boxster and Cayman, which together have seen a drop of 12 percent, falling to less than half the sales of the brand's best-selling model, the Cayenne.

“We have to make progress with Porsche,” VW CEO Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn told press recently in Europe.

“Mueller is the right person to deliver it. He has excellent ideas and a very clear concept of how new products have to be brought in line.”

Even before Volkswagen's takeover of the sports carmaker, Porsche had been pushing to grow its range beyond the current four-model line-up, hoping to double its global sales to 150,000 vehicles.

Mueller's track record shows that he has the head for the job however, with Audi's product line growing considerably during his tenure as product boss.
