Porsche Not Pursuing Hybrid Technology For Sports Car Range, All-Electric In The Works

WHILE THE CAYENNE and Panamera are due to launch in hybrid form in the near future, Porsche CEO Michael Macht has quashed rumours that the company is developing hybrid tech for the 911 - or any other of its sports cars.

Speaking with British magazine Autocar, Mr Macht said that although brake energy regeneration and stop-start technology is planned, hybrid technology is not on the agenda.

“It’s technically possible but it’s not part of the plan. It also adds weight,” Mr Macht told Autocar.

“We want brake regeneraton and stop-start for our sports cars, but not hybrid. They’re not driven in the city, where you get most of the advantages [of a hybrid].”

Mr Macht confirmed that while a hybrid sports car was not on the cards, the German carmaker is exploring options in the all-electric realm, adding that any electric Porsche must offer performance on par with its customers expectations.

With hybrid technology ruled out, Macht's comments add credence to spy photos captured early last of a 911 Cabriolet sporting an odd box on its bonnet bearing an electricity warning label.
