Its not all that often that a limited edition anything is terribly appealing. Maybe its just me and the thought of all those limited edition Commodores and Falcon’s that are released with gay abandon sporting some special badging, alloy wheels and really bad body striping. This limited edition is a little different though, not only does it look gorgeous (silver and red leather always looks good) it also serves to remind us of one of the all-time classic Porsches, the 1960 Type 718 RS 60 Spyder and its win in the Sebring 12hr race in Florida.

Dubbed the Boxter RS 60 Spyder it uses the Porsche Boxter S as a starting point and features a unique front spoiler and 19-inch diameter Porsche SportDesign alloy wheels, which spacer plates have moved outwards for a more purposeful stance. A modified sports exhaust system combined with dual tailpipes increases engine output to 226kW/303hp while Porsches Active Suspension Management (PASM) increases the RS 60 Spyders dynamic ability.

Its hard to go wrong with Silver and Porsche have used a distinctive GT Silver Metallic to contrast with the Carrera Red natural leather interior. The roof also gets the red treatment. If silver and red is not to your taste then there is also a Grey leather option with a Black roof. To round out the red treatment Porsche have even added some red to the taillight clusters.

On the inside, the RS 60 Spyder sees a number of added extras including stainless steel door trim strips and a textured finish to the leather covering the centre of the seats, centre door linings, steering wheel and handbrake lever. The instrument cluster is not covered by the usual hood in an effort to look more race-car-like and the instruments have been finished in the same GT Silver as the exterior. There is even a “bespoke” gear lever.

To further integrate the theme, Porsche have finished the windscreen surround in black, while the centre console, seat backrests and the roll hoops are all finished in GT Silver Metallic. Limited to 1,960 examples, each RS 60 Spyder comes with a silver-coloured plaque on the lid of the glove compartment.

Market launch of the new Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder is starting worldwide in March 2008. Including 19 per cent VAT and country-specific requirements, the retail price in Germany is Euro 63,873, the base price Euro 53,500.
