News from North America has us wondering if Australians are paying too much for their home grown Holden Commodores – either that or GM Holden have very slim profit margins on their VE Commodore exports.

The General revealed pricing details for the Pontiac G8 at a media event in the States overnight and the pricing has us wondering how they do it. The base V6 model will be priced from US27,595 with the V8 G8 GT starting from US29,995. You read that right...even taking into account the exchange rate, the North American market is being offered the equivalent of our VE SS Commodore (AUD46,990 for the auto) for somewhere around AUD36,000.

That means Holden build the Pontiac G8’s here in Oz, ship them over to the States and sell them for considerably less than we can buy the equivalent Commodore – and we live across the road from the factory, figuratively speaking.

However ours is not to reason why and this is great news for our fellow American enthusiasts who are about to get their hands on a well sorted 6.0-litre V8 rear-wheel-drive performance sedan.

And there we were thinking that Australia was the “lucky country” .
