Pontiac G8 And Solstice Unlikely To Live Past Next Five Years Photo:

Despite its colourful history and recent renaissance as vendors of fine automotive muscle, the Pontiac brand may yet fall back into boresville if the latest reports out of Detroit are true.

The G8 sedan, essentially Holden's SS Commodore, is reportedly unlikely to see a life beyond the next five years. While it has received plenty of praise from the motoring press, the G8 has been humbled somewhat by the downturn in the global economy and constantly rising fuel prices.

This is of course a story we're all familiar with by now. Because of this, GM is apparently not going to continue the G8 after its planned five-year life.

Also on the chopping block is Pontiac's attractive convertible, the Solstice. Along with its chassis sibling the Saturn Sky and the Opel GT, low sales figures look likely to doom the hot little roadsters.

Given that we don't actually get any of these little buggers in Australia, it might seem fair to say "yeah, so?". But of course, the obvious follow-on effect here is that we may well end up seeing the G8's fate also happen to Holden's V8 range.
