DEEPENING the ties between the two groups, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi have announced that both French brands will offer versions of the 2010 Mitsubishi RVR (ASX in Europe) from next year.

The new models will mark the fourth collaboration for the partnership, including the Outlander-based Peugeot 4007, PSA's version of the i MiEV, and a joint factory in Russia.

As with the 4007, many aspects of the PSA versions of the RVR will be shared with their Japanese counterpart, although front and rear styling will be redesigned to suit each brand.

For Mitsubishi, the deal will allow it to invest more heavily in new platforms and alternative versions of the RVR platform.

Both the Mitsubishi and PSA versions of the ASX will be offered in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive layouts, however powertrain options will differ.

While Mitsubishi will offer the ASX with a 1.6 litre petrol and 1.8 litre diesel engine, it will supply a 2.0 litre petrol engine for the PSA versions. PSA Peugeot Citroen will also use its own 1.6 litre diesel engine for its versions of the small SUV.

With Ateco-managed Citroen pushing for a more upmarket image in the Australian market, it is unlikely to bring its ASX/RVR-based SUV to Australia. Peugeot, already offering the Outlander-based 4007, is a stronger possibility.

Mitsubishi Australia has yet to confirm any details or timing for the arrival of the RVR, or which name the new model will wear locally.
