For the first time in 18 months, Victoria Police blocked the the city's Westgate Bridge last night, catching 27 drink-driving motorists in the process.

Along with Operation Ardent in the suburb of Hoppers Crossing, the two operations saw 3468 drivers tested for alcohol, drugs or both.

Officers taking part in Operation Ardent in Hoppers Crossing also caught seven drink-drivers and two drug-affected drivers.

The highest alcohol reading detected during the night was on the Westgate, with a 30 year-old male driver blowing 0.196.

Males returned the majority of the high readings.

  • 40-year-old man blew 0.124
  • 49-year-old man blew 0.119
  • 33-year-old man blew 0.149
  • 37-year-old man blew 0.182
  • 29-year-old woman blew 0.109

"Police are extremely concerned at the high number of drink drivers caught on one of our busiest freeways with such large quantities of alcohol in their system," Melbourne Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Simon Stevens said.

The state's 2010 road toll currently sits at 211 - up from 190 for the same period last year - after hitting 200 earlier this month.
