A total of 7883 traffic offenders were nabbed during Operation Aegis VIII, conducted by the Victorian Police over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. Of this number, 3092 were for speeding offences.

Around 107,000 breath tests were conducted, leading to 326 motorists being charged for drink-driving. Nearly 590 roadside drug tests were also conducted, with 14 motorists testing positive.

Around 300 unlicensed drivers were detected, along with another 146 for driving while disqualified.

Vicroads' campaign against mobile phone use appears to be having little effect on many, with 535 motorists nabbed talking or texting on their phones.

Other infringements include 428 drivers disobeying traffic signals or signs, and 328 seatbelt offences.

The state's road toll for the long weekend totalled four deaths, while the tally for the year so far sits at 149. At the same time last year, the road toll was 133.
