Debate over the best course of action for educating young drivers rages on this week, with the New South Wales Opposition announcing that it would make a one-day driving course compulsory for learner drivers if elected.

NSW Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner said that before becoming compulsory, the course would be launched as an option for young drivers, wiping 20 hours off the required 120 hours of driving practice.

He said that the course would be completely free and, while a cost for the project had not been confirmed, insurance companies would be encouraged to contribute.

"We've done some surveys with young drivers, we've spoken to the NRMA, we've spoken to some of the organisations that already offer these young driver education courses," Mr Stoner told Fairfax Radio Network this week.

According to insurer AAMI, young drivers continue to be immune to government safe-driving campaigns and 'hoon' laws. Its research indicates that an alarming percentage of young motorists aged 18 to 24 persist in dangerous behaviours such as speeding and drink-driving.

In NSW alone, there are around 250,000 learner drivers, 140,000 P1 drivers and another 250,000 P2 drivers.
