New South Wales police say its Operation Safe Arrival campaign, launched on Christmas Eve and running through to January 7, is showing a marked improvement in the state's road toll.

The NSW holiday road toll remains at three, nine fatalities less than for the same period last year. The improvement has not come without its share of offences, however, with a total of 1236 infringement notices issued yesterday.

On Day Six of the operation, a total of 37,378 breath tests were conducted with 26 PCA charges laid.

During the same period last year 31, 722 tests were conducted with 68 charges laid.

As part of Operation Safe Arrival, double demerit points will be in place for all speeding and seatbelt offences across New South Wales until January 3.
