Police in New South Wales are urging motorists this week to steer clear of flood-affected roads in the state's central and south west.

Major flooding has seen the closure of a number of roads in those regions, State Emergency Operations Controller Dave Owens said.

“Motorists are strongly advised to delay their travels to the flood affected areas of central and south western New South Wales. A number of townships have had roads cut and as a result are isolated,” Deputy Commissioner Owens said.

“More heavy rainfall is expected over the next few days. The Bureau of Meteorology have advised forecast rainfall will most likely increase flooding already being experienced in areas, which is most concerning."

Mr Owens said that even heavier rainfall is expected in the coming days, and  the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast that rainfall will most likely increase flooding already being experienced in areas.

The affected roads which remain closed include:

  • Mitchell Highway between Narromine and Dubbo. Narromine still has access to Dubbo via Tomingley and access to Parkes via the Newell Highway
  • Lachlan Valley Way, isolating Gooloogong by the most direct routes from Cowra and Forbes
  • Capertee Bridge
  • Newell Highway between Parkes and Forbes has a single lane open with traffic control measures in place.

Several local roads are also closed or affected. Police are urging motorists are urged to check with the RTA or local councils.
