In a rare win for motorists, the New South Wales demerit points system will soon get an overhaul that will include more points and fewer chances to lose them.

Announced today, the revised demerits system will see regular driving licences gain an extra point (from 12 to 13). Commercial or "professional" drivers - including taxi, truck, courier and bus drivers - will get a total of 14 points.

While licence points go up, 22 offences that carry a demerit risk will have the number of points either reduced or removed.

Among the adjusted offences will be those involving roundabouts and not using indicators, with both no longer incurring a loss of points.

The points penalty for driving in a bus lane will be reduced from three to one, while getting too close to another vehicle, and overtaking when unsafe, will be reduced from three points to two.

NSW Premier Kristina Keneally called the overhaul the biggest the system has had since it was introduced in 1969, making the state's system the most "generous" in the country.

The state's new fleet of mobile speed cameras will also be made more obvious, including bright markings and signs posted at least 50 metres before the vehicle's position.

The changes are scheduled to be introduced into parliament this week.
