Following an announcement in March that a diesel powerplant would soon join the line-up, Nissan has this week unveiled a diesel variant for the European-market 2011 Nissan Murano, bringing a modest facelift with it.

Designed largely as a functional requirement, the diesel model's revised front bumper allows greater airflow into the hotter-running turbo diesel's radiators.

Powered by an updated version of Nissan's 2.5 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, the new Murano 2.5 dCi variant offers 142kW and 450Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

In this combination, fuel consumption for the diesel Murano is listed at 8.0 l/100km, with carbon emissions listed at 210g/km.

With the brand's local diesel requirements covered by the likes of the Patrol, Pathfinder and X-Trail, Nissan Australia presently has no plans to bring in the diesel Murano.

"There are no plans yet for Murano diesel. We see Murano being more appealing to the current prestige boutique crossover market (Lexus RX) and offer diesels in our traditional 4WDs," Nissan Australia's Jeff Fisher told TMR today.

With an update for the Murano going on sale in March, Mr Fisher confirmed that the local line-up is unlikely to change in the immediate future.

"New Murano went on sale here just 18 months ago, and we also tweaked specs in March. We believe the front-end modifications on the European diesel Murano are for that model only - we do not change grille spec."

Nissan Australia confirmed this week that an 2011 update for the X-Trail is due later this year, and an updated Pathfinder went on sale in early June. The all-new 2011 Nissan Patrol is also expected to arrive sometime next year.
