Stories of a rebirth for the Nissan 200SX, first reported two years ago, remained in circulation until CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that the project had been cancelled.

Now, according to UK website Autocar, a renewed focus on sports cars by competitors Toyota and Subaru has prompted Nissan to rethink things and revive the popular sports car.

Known as the Silvia in Japan (and among the the popular coupe's adherents), early reports last year suggested the new 200SX would be built on a shortened version of the FR-L platform that underpins the 370Z and the foreign-market Skyline.

According to the latest reports, Nissan is now considering a new platform after deciding the FR-L platform was too heavy for its new 200SX project.

The last 200SX, driven at the rear wheels by turbo and naturally-aspirated versions of Nissan's SR20 four-cylinder engine, was cancelled in 2002 after four years of production.

The new model is expected to build on the last generation's formula, featuring the same front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout and a 2+2 seating arrangement.

Power is speculated to be drawn from a turbo-charged 1.8 litre four-cylinder, developing around 150kW (similar in output to the last model).

The source for the report is unnamed - it remains to be seen whether there is any basis to the information. For now, it seems only time will tell whether the tuner favourite will return.
