Toyota has confirmed that the 86 coupe will live into a second generation, which like the first generation will be developed alongside Subaru.

Instead of being killed off by the Supra coupe, the next gen 86 will sit beneath the resurrected sports car in an expanded line up.

Toyota Europe marketing chief Matt Harrison said that the 86 had been “a successful ‘halo’ product for us”

“Supra is not to replace that car. They are for different audiences and are different products. We see a situation where they will sit alongside each other.”

The 86  which was first released in 2012 in Australia was developed as a joint venture with fellow Japanese carmaker Subaru, which released the same model with a Subaru BRZ badge.

Harrison said that it was a “safe assumption” that the second generation 86 would maintain its relations with Subaru in using the same boxer engine and transmission under the hood.

Harrison said that for Toyota, the 86 was about “adding excitement to the brand and emotional appeal,” meaning the company was unlikely to let go of a model that has worked to do away with its more traditional, vanilla reputation.

Company president Akio Toyoda has expressed similar sentiment, with a desire to assemble a line up of performance cars by the brand.

The Japanese carmaker has found value in partnerships when it comes to developing sports car models, given the Supra, which was debuted in Detroit in January, was developed alongside the next generation BMW Z4.
