The Cactus is Cactus: Citroen Fells Funky Crossover

The C4 Cactus is (was) a stand-out oddity.

The Citroen Cactus will be departing stage left after only one generation on the market, with the French carmakers confirming that the funky SUV won't be getting a second chance to dazzle.

Product boss at Citroen, Xavier Peugeot told Top Gear magazine that the first C4 Cactus, which was introduced to the global market in 2014, was “a tremendous project” when it was unveiled

“It is in line with the Citroen values of demonstrating boldness and innovation and trying to consider cars in a different way.”

That boldness and innovation wasn’t enough for longevity however, with Peugeot saying that the Cactus was the brands C-segment hatch offering “for the time being”, and the next offering will be a new compact car instead of a crossover.

“Our next C-segment car to come will replace the C4 Cactus. This will be the end of the Cactus. For the name, I don’t know yet, but for the car, yes.”

In the interview Peugeot said that the new offering wouldn’t be a dull vehicle, but would live up to the brands more quirky offerings of late.

“We have made some choices which will definitely remain coherent with what Citroen stands for. The capacity to dare, the capacity to push the standards further than others do. To make cars which are not classical.”

The C4 Cactus was pretty “not classical” when it was first unveiled and released in 2014, with air bumps down the side which set it apart from all its peers at the time.

Though the company toned down the Cactus when it got a facelift in 2018, it was still an odd offering, and the company decided that the air bumps were cool, so added them to its C3 small car and its C3 Aircross crossover as well for good measure.
