French carmaker Renault has pulled the covers off the 2020 Captur, the small SUV that won over hearts when it was first released in 2013.

In a release on Wednesday (July 3) Renault claims similar credits to other carmakers around the world; that its model was the true pioneer in the urban SUV market, pointing to total global sales of 1.2 million units as proof.

The new Captur looks familiar (and along the same lines as the new Clio), but Renault says its a whole new deal.

“The All-new Captur is completely reinventing itself: new design, new interior with Smart Cockpit, new quality standards, new equipment, new technologies and new driving aids transcend the urban customizable SUV experience,” said the company.

85 percent of the parts used in the next-generation Captur are all-new.

A cool feature is in the colour scheme, or schemes, wherein upon release buyers can pick from 11 primary body colours, 4 contrasting roof colours and 3 customization packages.

It continues on the inside as well; buyers can pick from 7 colour schemes for the interior, so there may be a few wacky combinations rolling around when the new Captur gets released in 2020.

On the technology front Renault was busy talking up the new features; the new Captur will have a plug-in hybrid variant and all Captur’s will be “connected” to the web at all times for multimedia and safety purposes.

Additionally, Renault said the Captur would be a pioneer in its autonomous vehicle technology, though it didn’t elaborate on how except it would be one of 15 models planned to have AV tech.

On the hybrid technology, the Captur will be a mixed hybrid but with 45 km of purely electric range.

The Captur will be released in Europe early next year.
