The Chevrolet Camaro could not be long for this world, if the reports are to be believed with the muscle car’s sales dwindling and General Motors losing appetite for everything that isn’t a truck.

As reported by Muscle Cars and Trucks, the future seventh-generation Camaro is dead before it even completed development, with sources within GM telling the publication that the current sixth-generation model will be its last hurrah—for now.

While the Camaro may live until 2023 in its current iteration, this would mark the second time the nameplate has been killed off, after having suffered a similar fate back in 2002 when its fourth generation was axed.

According to sources within GM, the cars future is charted until 2023, and then there’s nothing afterwards. Considering 2023 isn’t that far out, that’s not a good sign.

When American publication motor1.com reached out to GM for confirmation, it was slapped with a response you’d likely expect with the company reiterating its update for the model in the US.

“While we will not engage in speculation, we will remind you of our recently announced updates coming to the Camaro lineup this fall,” it said before launching into some promotion.

“An all-new LT1 model will provide customers V8 power with the design and affordability of our LT trim. The award-winning SS model will feature a new front fascia from the Camaro Shock concept. All of our updates are customer-driven to improve the car and it’s driving experience.”

Reportedly however the Camaro will not transition over to a new platform being lined up for its comrades in the GM portfolio at Cadillac.

Sales for the muscle car haven’t been that stellar, with 2018 numbers down 25 percent on the year prior with 51,000 units rolling off dealership lots in the US, meaning the sixth-generation has failed to live up to the successes of the fifth-generation which helped revive GM’s fortunes in 2009.

The Camaro only recently made it to Australia in early 2019 thanks to Holden’s HSV—it needs to be comprehensively re-engineered for right-hand drive as the American carmaker does not make any right-hand drive units fresh out of the factory.
