Electric pickup trucks will be the next big thing.

Ford has confirmed its top-selling F-Series truck and Transit van are going electric, with both hybrid and battery-electric versions coming in the next-generation vehicles.

Announcing the news at Deutsche Bank Global Auto Industry Conference in Detroit, Ford CEO Jim Hackett said the blue oval was ready to go clean with one of its largest vehicles on sale.

“We are going to electrify the F-Series with battery electric and hybrid and we are doing the same for Transit. We launched a PHEV version of Transit and that will be on a journey of electrifying Transit globally,” he said.

The announcement follows a recently revealed $15 billion future strategy that will see 16 battery-electric vehicles brought to the market by 2022; the new F-Series is due to launch by 2020.

Previously, Ford said it would only build a hybrid version of the US’ number one-selling truck in the next two years, but mounting pressure in the segment from Tesla’s proposed EV pickup and newcomer Rivian – a US-based electric vehicle startup – with its R1T electric pickup has forced Ford’s hand.

As previously reported by Drive, Ford said it is considering launching the F-Series in Australia with the next-generation vehicle. But that car will now have to compete with Rivian, which confirmed the R1T will arrive down under sometime in the future. On sale already here are the HSV-converted Chevrolet Silverado and ASV-converted RAM trucks.

Given some of the simplified architecture inside of an electric vehicle, it’s possible the F-Series EV with no emissions constraints to worry about could be on the list of exports in right-hand drive, along with the new long-range diesel F-150.
