The second generation of Nissan’s baby SUV, the Juke is set to break cover before the end of the year.

According to reporting by AutoExpress, we’ll see the new Juke—which will be based on the same Renault-Nissan’s CMF-B platform that the Renault Captur is based on—before the end of this year.

What that means in that the next-generation Juke will be capable of being a plug-in hybrid, and perhaps even all-electric.

Nissan’s European product planning chief Peter Bedrosian told Auto Express: "People are moving from sedans and hatches into SUV-type vehicles – and that’s happening globally, not just in Europe.

He also added a teaser on powertrain options as well.

“On top of that there’s electrification, so it’s a perfect combination. We’re working on several powertrain options at the moment.”

Renault-Nissan tech means that a hybrid powertrain would pair an electric motor and a 9.8kWh battery with a 1.6-litre four cylinder engine, giving it a 20-mile range (or 32km) on just electric power.

According to the reports, Nissan’s top brass are also considering offering up a challenger to Kia’s e-Niro and Hyundai’s Kona EV offerings—both of which are all-electric.

It’s not all just about offering up Nissan-branded alternatives to electric vehicles on the market, the new Juke will have more passenger space and more boot space as well—tackling issues with the current model.
