In gift giving it’s the thought that counts, but we think you can do better than another Supercheap Auto gift card. Here are 10 experiences that make the perfect gift for the car lover in your life.

Whether you’re after high-octane action or something a little more sedentary, these experiences make great gift ideas for anyone with oil in their veins.

  1. Book a weekend away at the Australian Grand Prix

The Australian Grand Prix is always essential viewing, but there’s nothing like being there in person. The chance to see the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel speeding around the Albert Park track is a great excuse to book a spontaneous trip to Melbourne and will put you in Pole Position in the gift giving stakes.

  1. Spend an afternoon at the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania

The Apple Isle might be better known for local produce and national parks, but it’s also home to one of the best vehicle collections in Australia. Located in Launceston, the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania has ever-changing exhibits that showcase over 100 years of automotive history.

  1. Test your skills in a high-octane go-karting session

Looking for a gift for someone who’s sensibility is a little more high-octane? Go-karting is a great way to test your driving skills (and let off a bit of steam).

Pricing is generally pretty reasonable if you’re booking as a group and there are some great racing tracks around the major cities including Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Carting, Melbourne’s International Carting Complex and Brisbane’s famous Kingston Park Raceway.

  1. Hire a luxury sports car for the weekend

The Great Ocean Road is one of the most beautiful drives in Australia, but you know what’s even better than cruising past the 12 Apostles? Cruising past the 12 Apostles in a Ferrari.

Hire a sports car for the weekend and take the person you’re treating on one of Australia’s classic drives. A weekend away is already a great gift, and a luxury sports car really puts the icing on top

  1. Book a stunt driving experience

If you’re buying for someone who sits a little more at the Dukes of Hazzard end of the auto-enthusiast spectrum, a stunt driving experience might just fit the bill.

There are plenty on offer in Australia, but the Stunt Driving School at Sandown Raceway is particularly good. Get them behind the wheel as they perform daring stunts like a 360-degree spin or a ramp jump in the style of The Italian Job. Watch on with glee, or with one eye closed.

  1. Try a V8 driving experience

If you’re buying for someone who’s always fantasised about speeding down the stretch at Bathurst, a V8 driving experience will be highly appreciated. There are some great experiences available at Eastern Creek and Sandown, but if you really want to buy a gift that’s going to be remembered we’d recommend booking a few laps at Mount Panorama.

  1. Test their knowledge at the National Transport Museum

If the person you’re celebrating is in anyway interested in automotive history, a trip to the National Transport Museum in Inverell, NSW, is a necessary pilgrimage. It’s the perfect day out for any car connoisseur, and highlights include a 1912 Renault, 1926 Diana, 1929 Package, and what is widely believed to be one of the last remaining 1906 Daytons on display.

  1. Line up a drift driving experience

Lost count of the times your mate has watched Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift? A car drifting experience is the perfect gift to satisfy their drifting desires in a fun, fast-paced (and most-importantly, legal) environment. There are a range of options available in Australia, no matter where you are, but the track at Eastern Creek makes for some particularly good drifting.

  1. Head to the National Motor Museum

Dedicated to the collection, preservation and display of Australia’s automotive history, the National Motor Museum in South Australia is a great way to spend a day out with the special someone in your life who loves cars as much as they love you. There’s no shortage of notable vehicles on display and exhibits change periodically so even if you’ve been before, another visit would definitely be worth your while.

  1. Book a 4WD buggy drive

If you have someone in your life that likes to get off road from time to time, a 4WD buggy drive experience will make the perfect gift. These vehicles are serious off-road fun and there are some great options available outside most capital cities, including Yamaha Buggy Drive in Colo Heights, NSW, and V8 Buggy and Trophy Truck Driving in Ipswich, Queensland.
