For a little while now there has been speculation that 2007 will be the year that new car registrations crest the million unit milestone and no doubt that is exciting for many. Yet as the figures for June are released we find that our slowly building anticipation is hijacked by a sudden focus on the financial year. Yes, that’s right…car sale periods seem to have switched from a calendar year to a financial year and guess what…the magic million mark was exceeded!!! Sales for the period July 06 to June 07 totalled 1,004,097.

We were caught unawares and failed to make it to Safeway for the streamers and party poppers so our celebration of this new milestone is going to be rather a quiet one… Having said that we are planning to get raunchy at the end of the calendar year if new car registrations exceed one million units and by god we hope they do because we are ready! We even plan on getting some of those pointy cardboard hats with thin elastic straps that snap when you wear them.

The real news is that new car registrations remain on track to reach the million unit milestone by the end of this year. June saw sales of 105,097 units up from 96,448 for the same period last year while the year to date figure is now 524,376 up from 483,160 for the same period in 2006.

Toyota once again took the gong for the most sales with a total of 24,539. Trailing some 10,000 sales behind Toyota and eating their dust were Holden with 14,256 sales, Ford with 10,304 sales, Mitsubishi with 8,192 sales, Mazda with 6,932 sales and Nissan who managed to move 5,845 units.

The light car segment experienced the biggest gain when compared to the previous year, up 22.9%. The medium car segment, helped no doubt by strong Toyota Aurion sales showed an 18.8% improvement over the same period last year and the large car segment continued to experience growth with a 3.7% increase over the same period last year.

So there you go. Re-cork the wine, stow the keg, turn off the bbq and wait until early January 2008 for the calendar year sales figures. The New Year will be around in a flash.
