We have already covered the new Mazda 2 which has recently begun production in Japan. Interestingly, the little Mazda is setting the pace in a number of key areas and has obviously been designed rather intelligently.
We have reported on the Miller Cycle technology that will see the Mazda 2 challenge hybrids for fuel efficiency although it is not expected that Australian delivered cars will be available with this technology, at least not initially.
It gets even more interesting when you learn that the new Mazda 2 actually weighs 100kg less than the soon to be superceded model! In an age where cars put on weight with each new model somehow Mazda have been able to achieve the impossible.
The weight reduction has been partially achieved through reduced length and height but Mazda should still be commended for bringing the weight of the new 2 in under 1000kg. As we all know, reduced weight means better fuel economy, better handling and improved brake efficiency.
In an age where good looks and a slim waistline are ever more important the new Mazda 2 should do very well.
