For lovers of Mercedes-Benz' AMG-enhanced CLK63, you'd best take a good long look at the images above and below as there will not be a replacement for the current model.

The problem, it seems, is competition from the marque's own lineup. By switching from a C-Class to a E-Class chassis, the CLK63 has jumped a class and now poses a threat for sales of the CLS63 AMG.

A Mercedes insider had this to say of the decision:

“We had a good look where it would fit into the line-up and eventually came to the conclusion it would be too close to the CLS63 AMG, both in positioning and price,”

Worse still is knowing that without a new CLK63, we also lose out on the next version of the CLK AMG Black Series. We know, we're feeling it too.

Thankfully, it's not all bad news, as Mercedes has confirmed that work on a replacement for the CLS63 AMG is currently underway.

Rumours also suggest the CLS63 could be the first car to receive AMG's new twin-turbo direct injection V8 engine that's scheduled to be unveiled next year.

It's fair to say, then: watch this space.
