Previously only available in the AWD model, Holden's 2.0 litre diesel engine is now to make its way into a two-wheel drive Captiva SX and will offer segment-leading fuel efficiency in the process. The medium-SUV market is becoming increasingly crowded, so the move by Holden to give buyers a chance to own the diesel without the AWD will help give the Captiva a competitive edge.

The 110kW and 320Nm common-rail diesel comes with either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, returning 7.2 and 8.5 l/100kms respectively (quite impressive for a vehicle of this size).

The manual can be yours for $33,990, though you'll have to wait until September when it hits dealerships. The auto is available right now for $35,990 - both models are $2,000 less than their AWD equivalents.

GM Holden?s Director of Marketing, Philip Brook, explained how the two new models will fit into the Captiva range.

?For consumers who want all the benefits of a medium SUV but don?t need the performance of an AWD, the 2WD Captiva SX is the perfect solution. They get the sporty design, flexibility and turbo diesel power plus the fuel efficiency of a much smaller vehicle.?

Don't make the mistake of thinking the Captiva SX is a bargain-basement model: it retains the same specifications as its AWD counterpart. Traction Control, Active Rollover Protection, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and six airbags including driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags all come as standard.

To sweeten an already considerable offering, Holden is throwing in free side steps and roof-mounted DVD player to any private customer who purchases a Captiva SX, CX or LX by 31 October 2008, or while stocks last. So don't miss out.
