THE LATEST ROUND of ANCAP crash safety tests have yielded 5-Star results for the small, ultra-efficient MINI Cooper D, Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, Volvo C30 Diesel and Toyota Prius.

The recently released Subaru Liberty Exiga and diesel-powered 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe both achieved 5-Star ratings, while the Honda City scored a 4-Star rating.

Speaking of the Cooper D, Fiesta ECOnetic, C30 Diesel and the Prius, ANCAP Business Manager Nick Clarke said the new results show that buyers can save fuel and still get the best protection.

“These ratings show that manufacturers can make a range of fuel efficient vehicles which do not compromise safety results,” Mr Clarke said.

The Liberty Exiga's 5-Star result continues Subaru's run as a full 5-Star line-up, joining the rest of the Liberty range, Forester, Tribeca and the new Impreza.

The 5-Star result for the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe comes after improvements over the pre-update model, which previously achieved a 4-Star rating.

The absence of ESC saw the Honda City miss out on a 5-Star rating, however Honda Australia confirmed in June that the City (and the Jazz, also a 4-Star car) will feature the technology from late next year.

"The Honda City missed out on 5 stars because ESC is not available. ANCAP has required ESC for 5 stars since the beginning of 2008, so the lack of ESC for the City is disappointing," Mr Clarke said.

Each of the 5-Star models in the latest tests offer side and curtain airbags, antilock brakes, electronic brake distribution and electronic stability control as standard.
