The bug has been squashed.

First developed in 1938 by engineer Ferdinand Porsche as a pet project to develop the people's car for Adolf Hitler, the Volkswagen Beetle went on to become an automotive icon.

Since then, the legendary Beetle has survived years of changes, updates and movie appearances.

It has been manufactured around the globe, from Ireland, South Africa and Brazil - even in Australia.

Now, Volkswagen has announced the end of the bug, with the modern, retro-flavoured model ceasing production in 2019.

But there may still be hope for Beetle-lovers as Volkswagen looks to the future.

It is unconfirmed if the Beetle will be re-born with an electric heart, but as we’ve seen recently with the electrified Kombi van concept, the I.D Buzz, it’s difficult to rule anything out just yet.

Volkswagen America chief executive Hinrich J. Woebcken says the company will concentrate on electric vehicles.

“As we move to being a full-time, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy, there are no immediate plans to replace the Beetle,” he says.

“I would say, never say never.”

The German car maker says the last year of production will bring two special edition models to its line-up - the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL.
