Volkswagen’s V6 Amarok is set to receive an upgrade this year, gaining a reworked version of the brand’s diesel powertrain.
The twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 will kick out potent 190kW and 580Nm outputs when it arrives in the third quarter of the year, outgunning key rivals including the 147kW, 500Nm Holden Colorado and 147kW, 470Nm Ford Ranger.
The decision to beef up the Amarok’s existing peaks of 180kW and 550Nm (produced in periods of “overboost”) follows confirmation from Mercedes that the range-topping Mercedes-Benz X-Class X350d ute will feature a similar twin-turbo diesel V6 with 190kW and 550Nm.
VW says the new motor will be offered at a “slight premium” to the current Amarok V6 Ultimate (priced from $67,990 plus on-road costs) before featuring in cheaper Highline models currently priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs.
