Mini has given its little hatch and convertible a mild makeover for 2018, while also streamlining the range.

The British brand is ushering in the updated three- and five-door Mini Cooper - as well as the convertible  - with a raft of styling and technology updates.  The British marque is also culling the diesel-powered Cooper D models with only the petrol-powered Cooper, S and John Cooper Works (JCW) offered. Only the larger Countryman will offer a diesel engine.

Exterior cosmetic upgrades extend to a new Mini logo on all models while Cooper S and JCW models get new LED lights and rear Union Jack-styled taillights as standard, which are optional on the base Cooper.

All models now have five additional colour options and three optional 17-inch alloy wheel designs.

Mini has boosted the Cooper's technology credentials with a new infotainment system that offers Apple CarPlay on all variants, while S and JCW models also score wireless smartphone charging. In addition to these features all the Cooper models are now 4G enabled which allows for the integration of Mini's connected suite which offers apps and real-time traffic information.

The British car maker has given all models a price rise of varying degree. The base Mini Cooper three- and five-door models have seen a price rise of $1900, while S versions see a jump of $200 and the three-door JCW model is $1000 more expensive.

Convertible models have seen a price rise of $1300 for the base Cooper, $400 for the Cooper S and $1000 for the JCW variant.

Clubman models are also in line for a price rise, costing $2600 more for the base model and the S while the JCW version is $1000 more expensive.

Base Coopers are powered by a 100kW/220Nm turbocharged three-cylinder petrol unit, while S versions are propelled by a 141kW/280Nm four-cylinder turbo petrol unit. Both engines come standard with a six-speed manual with the option of a seven-=speed dual-clutch automatic.

Range-topping JCW models utilise a 170kW/320Nm four-cylinder petrol unit that comes standard with a eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual at no extra cost.

The new Mini range goes on sale from July 1, 2018.
