Maserati has filled out its Levante family with a Ferrari-powered version of its SUV.

Revealed at the New York motor show, the Levante Trofeo will sit above the diesel Levante and the V6-powered Levante S that has recently gone on-sale in Australia when it arrives in local showrooms early next year.

Unique to the Trofeo, it is powered by a version of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that's also used in the new Ferrari Portofino roadster and the mid-engined 488 GTB sports car.

In the Maserati, it produces 440kW and 730Nm and is hooked-up to an all-wheel drive transmission, giving it the ability to rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 300km/h.

Part of that comes from a new Corsa driving mode that brings a race-style launch control function, as well as opening the exhaust system to produce a thundering soundtrack, tightening the suspension for greater body control and adding more weight to the steering for a sportier feel.

To ensure the engine works efficiently, the Trofeo features numerous body modifications including bigger air intakes in the front bumper with vertical fins that direct air through cool the engine and brakes effectively.

It also features a host of carbon fibre aerodynamic add-ons, including a front lip spoiler, rear diffuser and body highlights.

The suspension has also been recalibrated to live up to its performance credentials with stiffer springs and damper settings and the car is fitted with 22-inch wheels  - the largest ever fitted to a Maserati.

More details, including pricing and local specifications, will be confirmed closer to its arrival.
