The new Toyota Supra will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of speed this week.

Toyota will press the high-performance machine into action alongside some of the world’s finest cars at Britain’s most important motoring event over the course of four days from July 12 to 15.

Officially classified as a “production prototype”, the vehicle on show will be much closer to a production reality than the race-inspired Supra concept car revealed at the Geneva motor show (below) in March.

Toyota has kept quiet on technical details surrounding the model, which is built on the same platform as BMW’s next-generation Z4 convertible. The machine is expected to share turbocharged four and six-cylinder engines with BMW’s sports car, driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Australian Toyota Supra price and specifications data will not be available for some time as the vehicle has not been confirmed for local introduction.

But the brand’s sales and marketing boss, Sean Hanley, says there has been plenty of interest in the Toyota 86’s bigger brother.

"The Supra nameplate commands enormous respect and there has been huge public interest in the development of the new model so we would like to see it on Australian roads," he said.

"It's a car that truly demonstrates Toyota's commitment to building and selling cars that really stir the emotions and deliver superb driving excitement.”

We’ll report further news surrounding the new Supra - and the Goodwood Festival of Speed - as it emerges.
