Suzuki has confirmed its new-generation Jimny four-wheel drive will arrive in Australian showrooms early next year.

The Japanese car maker has announced more details of the baby bush basher following a soft reveal last month that included only a selection of images.

Australian models will be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and feature genuine off-road abilities thanks to Suzuki's latest ALLGRIP PRO 4WD transmission with a low-range transfer case and rugged three-link live axles and raised suspension that are attached to a traditional ladder-frame chassis.

Suzuki has yet to outline performance attirbutes for the newly-developed K15B engine in the Jimny, but the same motor produces 78kW and 136Nm in other vehicles it is currently fitted to. While the figures aren't staggering, Suzuki claims the engine has been designed to deliver "ample torque at low revolutions maintaining off-road driving performance as well as enhanced fuel economy."

Elsewhere, the Jimny will also be marched into the modern age in terms of safety and connectivity technologies, with six airbags and automated emergency braking as standard along with a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen that integrates sat nav and smartphone mirroring.

"The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about," said Suzuki Australia boss Michael Pachota.

"The Australian landscape will be a true test for the iconic 4WD and I have no doubt it will rise to the challenge.

"I am very excited and highly anticipating the return of this legendary off-road compact SUV, in its all-new guise, to complement our already strong line-up of Suzuki vehicles in Australia."
