Subaru XV plug-in hybrid revealed
Subaru has announced its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Subaru Crosstrek.
Known locally as the Subaru XV, Subaru will reveal its first-ever plug-in hybrid variant of the small SUV at the LA motor show next month.
In the US it's known as the Subaru Crosstrek, currently offered with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine only, until next year’s all-wheel-drive hybrid variant is launched in North America.
It will use Subaru’s StarDrive Technology, which features the 2.0-litre direct injection Boxer engine, accompanied by two electric motors and a new Lineartronic CVT automatic.
One electric motor functions as the engine starter, while the other powers the vehicle for hybrid and electric driving modes, also charging the hybrid battery through regenerative braking.
The new Crosstrek Hybrid will feature blue headlight protector rings and a silver metallic finish on the front grille, lower front bumper and fog light accents and offer Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist package.
However, there are no current plans to bring the plug-in hybrid Crosstrek (or XV) down under, with Subaru Australia planning to concentrate on the development of its electric and hybrid vehicles, set to launch by the end of 2019.
