Takata’s airbag saga continues to roll-on as Subaru Australia adds to its list of cars affected by defective airbag inflator units.

The recall issued today concerns the Subaru 2008-13 Impreza, 2009-12 Forester, 2010-14 Liberty and 2010-14 Outback models. The latest update brings Subaru Australia’s tally of cars to over 150,000, with over three million vehicles affected in Australia from manufacturers including Honda, Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Ford and more.

Defective Takata airbag units may have an increased likelihood for moisture intrusion over time which could potentially make the inflator assembly more susceptible to rupture during airbag deployment. The ruptured inflator may create metallic fragments that could contact the occupant, resulting in injury or even death.

Earlier this year, a Sydney man died when a faulty Takata airbag deployed in his Honda CR-V, causing shrapnel to strike him in the neck. Honda claims it had sent five recall notices to the owner before the accident happened. The Japanese manufacturer, which is one of the most heavily affected in Australia, is currently making an urgent plea to customers who haven’t had their car repaired to do so.

The ACCC has also become involved and taken the unprecedented step of proposing an industry-wide mandatory recall that would add even more vehicles to the growing list, but the compulsory recall has divided opinion from manufacturers.

Further action to ensure compliance includes the potential of not being able to sell or register unrepaired vehicles.

Subaru is contacting known customers of its latest recalled vehicles by mail, however, concerned owners can visit Subaru's recall homepage, call its Recall Customer Relations Team on 1300 550 994, or email [email protected]

All manufacturers affected by the Takata have set-up standalone websites for concerned owners to check the status of their vehicle. The repair takes between two to four hours to complete and is free of charge.
