Skoda Scala hatch finally revealed
Skoda has revealed its rival to the Volkswagen Golf, the new Scala hatchback.
Due to arrive in Australian showrooms late in 2019, the Scala will effectively replace the invisible Rapid hatchback and slot in between the Fabia city car and Octavia sedan and wagon.
Sharing its fundamental basics with the new-generation Volkswagen Polo and a design inspired by the Vision RS concept that debuted at the 2018 Paris motor show, Skoda says the Scala opens a new chapter for the Czech-based Volkswagen-owned brand.
"It is an all-new model that sets benchmarks within its segment in terms of technology, safety and design," says Skoda CEO Bernhard Meier.
"The Scala perfectly embodies the Skoda-typical ‘smart understatement’. We’re convinced that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A segment for Skoda.”
Measuring 4362mm long, 1988mm wide, 1471mm tall and riding on a wheelbase of 2649mm, the Scala is slightly longer than a Volkswagen Golf and offers, what Skoda claims, is the longest interior dimensions in its class, as well as a sizeable 467L boot.
Inside the cabin, the Scala introduces a new design for Skoda built around the latest in digital technologies. Sitting proudly in the centre of the dashboard is a crisp 9.2-inch colour infotainment screen featuring Skoda's latest interface and mobile services, while the instrument cluster can be optioned with a 10.25-inch digital display. There's also ambient interior lighting, new microfibre suede-like trim on the seats.
The Scala will be offered in Europe with a choice of five engines, ranging from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo in two states of tune (70kW/175Nm with a five-speed manual or 85kW/200Nm with a six-speed manual), a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo with 110kW and 250Nm, a 1.6-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder with 85kW and 250Nm and specific variant of the 1.0-litre tuned to consume compressed natural gas.
Australian specifications have yet to be locked down, with engine choices dependent on the availability of motors without a particulate filter to suit Australia's lower-standard unleaded. The likelihood is that the Scala will be offered with the 85kW 1.0-litre and 110kW 1.5-litre four cylinder, each with a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Scala is available with an optional Sport Chassis that sits 10mm lower than standard and features adaptive dampers.
Confirmation of the Scala's local specifications will be released closer to its Australian arrival in the third quarter of 2019.
