Shifting away from a sales strategy limited to commercial customers, Renault has elected to sell the Zoe electric car to private buyers in Australia.

The compact hatch will be available through a limited number of dealers in NSW and Victoria set to be confirmed by Renault in the near future.

Customers can choose between two trim lines - a basic Zoe Life model for $51,990 drive-away or a better-equipped Zoe Intens for another $2000.

Powered by a 68kW, 220Nm electric motor and 22kWh lithium-ion battery with 300km of real-world range, the front-wheel-drive Zoe reaches 100km/h in a modest 14.5 seconds before topping out at 135km/h.

Entry-level models come as standard with 15-inch wheels, climate control and a 7-inch infotainment screen with sat nav. Intens models add a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, 16-inch wheels, an improved infotainment system and more.

Renault supports the Zoe with a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, though the battery is backed by a five-year, 100,000 kilometre guarantee.

The Zoe is expected to be followed into market by rivals such as the Nissan Leaf, along with an all-electric Hyundai Ioniq and VW's upcoming I.D series.
