Renault has changed its mind about the Kadjar SUV.

The company confirmed this week that the small SUV, which shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Qashqai, is on it’s way down under as the brand works to expand it’s SUV presence. In 2015, Renault said Australia was unlikely to get the Kadjar as it “wasn’t a good fit for the brand”, but with SUV sales continuing to rise the French brand now believes it’s a worthy addition now.

When the new Megane RS launched this week, Renault Australia managing director Andrew Moore announced the Kadjar SUV will arrive in Australia in the second half of 2019 - almost four years after it first went on sale in Europe.

“The mid-size SUV is a strong seller in Europe and along with our smaller Captur SUV and larger Koleos SUV, will provide Renault with a genuine SUV line-up to appeal to a wide range of Australian customers,” says Moore.

Renault also hopes to add the coupe-style Arkana SUV to its range to “break the mould of the SUV market with its bold and unique design."

“We believe the Arkana is a fantastic fit for the Australian market and as such, my team is pushing hard to have this vehicle developed in right-hand drive," added Moore.

“Our ambition for Renault Australia is to become a strong player in the SUV segment.

“We’ve already seen success in the popular SUV space with our Koleos and Captur and our intention is that in the future we will have an SUV that perfectly matches the various lifestyles of all Australians.”

Speaking to the media at the Megane RS launch, Moore revealed the brand plans to also bring its pick-up range of vehicles to Australia.

“Equally as exciting, we have been making strong headways in our ambition to launch two lifestyle-based pick-ups in Australia, the Renault Alaskan and the Renault Oroch," he said.

"Increasingly, we have seen customers move into the pick-up segment as a lifestyle choice, and we firmly believe that the European styling of our product offering, mixed with strong SUV underpinnings, make these Renault vehicles a compelling alternative for customers.”

Pricing and further specifications for the Kadjar are yet to confirmed for Aussie customers.
