Porsche’s benchmark sports car looks set to reach new heights with a track-only version of the new 911 GT2 RS.

Already a fearsome combination of the lightweight 911 GT3 RS’ uncompromising race-derived focus and the jet fighter thrust offered by the heavy-hitting 911 Turbo S , the road-going GT2 RS could be joined by a race-bred cousin in coming months.

Porsche booked Italy’s Monza grand prix circuit for a test day in April, wheeling out several models including a new 718 Cayman GT4 race car, an updated 911 GT3 R for races such as the Bathurst 12 Hour and the latest 911 RSR set to do battle with the likes of Ford, Ferrari and Aston Martin at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

One of the cars captured by YouTube regular 19Bozzy92 appears to be a 911 GT2 RS modified for race use. Video footage from the circuit reveals the reworked GT2 RS has new bodywork including a massive rear wing and additional cooling at the front end. A reprofiled rear end features twin exhausts pared together in the middle of the bumper, well away from their regular positions under the tail lamps. A relatively hushed engine note and crisp gearchanges suggests the racer retains the road car’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine, seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive hardware.

Porsche already offers three competition versions of its 911 (the GT3 Cup, GT3 R and GT3 RSR) , so we’re not quite sure where this would fit into its racing range. The machine could be a track-only toy for wealthy owners in a similar fashion to McLaren’s Senna GTR and the Ferrari La Ferrari FXXK, or it may join Porsche’s epic 919 Evo prototype on its record-breaking farewell tour.

In any case, the ultimate version of Porsche’s ultimate 911 would be a fitting farewell for the 991-generation sports car, which will replaced by a new 992-generation family in 2019.

Further information surrounding the mysterious model could emerge at the Nurburgring 24 Hour on May 12-13 or at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12-15.
