In the same week that Bugatti announced its $8 million hypercar, the world’s newest auto venture has revealed its own rival.

Pininfarina might have historic roots in Italy as a contract design house that has shaped some of the most beautiful machines for brands like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and even Volvo but the coachbuilder has spun of a new fully-electric and exotic car making arm based in Munich, Germany. Owned by Indian auto giant Mahindra, Pininfarina says it will be able to sustainably develop and produce a range of electric super and ultra-luxury cars based on the parent brand’s Formula E racing technology.

Heading the new venture is a small crack team poached from brands such as McLaren, Bugatti, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo.

Newly appointed CEO Michael Perschke says the start-up will offer an exotic range of cars unlike anything currently available.

“Automobili Pininfarina is a pioneering new business created to service the most discerning clients in the world," he said.

"Our product portfolio will launch with an innovative, zero-emissions hypercar that represents the progression we aim to make at the pinnacle of the luxury and sports car market.”

Its first car will be the upcoming PF0, an ultra-luxe, ultra-rare hypercar running on a fully-electric drivetrain to rival the Bugatti Divo that itself will produce near 1100kW and 1600Nm from a ‘conventional’ quad-turbo W16 engine petrol motor.

It's just the first model in a range of cars to come that will pique the interest of cashed-up collectors.

The two-seater has been teased in sketch form and will be shown as a full concept at Pebble Beach during the Monterey Car Week next month.
