Forget image building cars like the RCZ, from now on Peugeot has its eye on the SUV cash cow, with reports that an coupe-inspired SUV called the 4008 will be the next high-rider to join the French brand’s range.

The report comes from Auto Express in the UK, following comments from Peugeot CEO Jean-Phillippe Imparato who suggested there were “other things” to come from the brands SUV range.

Most of the 4008’s basics will be shared with the existing 3008 (below), with the two models sharing Peugeot’s lightweight EMP2 platform, although suspension tune for the 4008 will be unique to give it a more sporting feel.

Engines will also come from within the existing Peugeot family including 1.6-litre turbo petrol, and 1.6 and 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines planned, with plug-in hybrid models also slated to appear.

Following the template set by cars like the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, the 4008 will feature a lower and more tapered roof compared to the 3008 but will keep its five seat capacity.

The new model is also set to adopt a series of high-end styling cues taken from some of Peugeot’s recent concept vehicles in an attempt to lure buyers away from established prestige brands.

Peugeot most recently applied the 4008 name to a badge-engineered version of the Mitsubishi ASX, topped and tailed with unique styling at each end and offered for sale between 2012 and 2017.
