Good news: Australians have bought more than one million new cars in 2018.

Bad news: After years of record sales for new models 2018 appears to be the point the growth stopped, with the November new car sales data revealing a continued decline.

According to the data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) today the market is down 1.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2017. Sales for November 2018 were down 7.4 per cent from November last year. In total Australians have bought 1,065,583 new vehicles so far in 2018.

While passenger car sales have been in a steady decline as consumers opt out of the traditional sedan market, what was more surprising was the drop in SUVs. Passenger cars were down 20.8 per cent in November 2018 compared to the previous year. Sales of SUVs dropped 1.9 per cent across all segments in a more concerning aspect for car makers.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber acknowledged the decline amid an overall dip in the economy but said the continued ability to surpass one millions sales annually is a good sign for the market. And he was bullish about the continued consumer shift towards SUVs and out of passenger cars.

“The November 2018 sales reflect tougher conditions across the economy,” Weber said. “However, it is encouraging that sales have once again passed the one million mark for 2018, with one more selling month to go.

“The 1.9 per cent fall in sales to same number during the 2017 record year is a modest outcome within a market where consumer preferences are rapidly shifting from passenger vehicles to SUVs.”

Utes continue to be the most popular vehicles with the Toyota HiLux the biggest seller followed by the Ford Ranger and the Mitsubishi Triton the fourth most popular; behind the Toyota Corolla.
