The German brand has issued a recall notice for its new generation Polo small hatch which went on sale earlier this year.

The local recall joins a global notice to repair 2018 Polo models affected by a faulty rear-seatbelt lock that may unbuckle under certain conditions, such as when strong force is applied across the belt.

Specifically, the left-rear seatbelt can inadvertently release itself when there are passengers sitting in both the left and centre seats, and the car maker is asking customers to not sit anyone in the centre seat until the buckle has been repaired.

The front and rear belt chime alerts will continue to work and alert the driver if the buckle does become unlatched.

Volkswagen has not said how many vehicles in Australia will be recalled but will notify all customers to have the buckle replaced for a re-designed part free of charge.
