New Chevrolet Silverado breaks cover
Chevrolet has revealed a bold new face for its heavy-duty US truck range.
The largest model in the line-up, the 2020 Silverado HD brings a fresh exterior and updated powertrain options.
Chevy says there are two new engine options available for the new HD, including the popular Duramax turbo diesel paired to an all new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
The roof is said to be the only component shared between the new model and the current 1500, with Chevrolet saying every other piece of sheet metal is exclusive to the Silverado HD with the 2020 model getting an entirely updated look.
The new front-end, including headlights, a ‘CHEVROLET’ grille and front bar appear to be a nod to the past, with some aspects of it resembling a 1960s Chev pick-up.
Chevy’s chief engineer Jaclyn McQuaid says they know the needs and priorities of heavy-duty customers are different to those of light and medium duty customers.
“We built a heavy-duty truck tailor-made for them that has more differentiation than ever before from light-duty models and offers advanced towing technologies and new features like the integrated Bedstep.”
In the wake of General Motors' heavy cuts to its passenger car lineup, 2019 will be a busy year for its bigger models. The US car brand says the 2020 Silverado HD will be on sale halfway through next year and plans to also launch the Colorado ZR2 Bison and new Silverado 1500 and medium-duty trucks shortly after.
But it isn’t clear whether Australia will see the updated HD model. HSV imports and re-manufacturers Chevrolet vehicles in Australia but hasn't confirmed whether the new Silverado will fit in with the local market.
“We have no comment to make on future product development plans,” HSV spokesman, Damon Paul, told Drive. "But the current Silverado has been doing very well in Australia.”
Currently, HSV offer the Chevy Silverado in five re-engineered models in Australia.
